20 Years of Turkey Legs & Holes-in-One

Kenosha, WI (April 23, 2007) - Inspired by a ride at Busch Gardens, Ben Jones designed Congo River Golf & Games in Kenosha, Wisconsin, around an African jungle theme, incorporating the history of Central Africa and two great explorers, Stanley and Livingstone. A little Polynesian and Indian Jones influence were mixed in as well.  Meanwhile, jousting knights, raucous, earth-clad mud beggars, strolling jesters, Robin Hood, and Her Majesty’s Royal Parade and Progress, are set on the streets of an Elizabethan English Village at the Bristol Renaissance Faire. Both entertaining, one-of-a-kind attractions are celebrating twenty-year anniversaries this year in the Kenosha Area.

Located just miles from Lake Michigan, midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, Congo River and Bristol Renaissance Faire have both made their mark in the lives of numerous visitors. In 20 years time, Congo River has hosted countless birthday parties, group outings, family reunions, and fundraisers.  It features 18 holes of Adventure Golf, an Arcade, Concessions/Gift Shop, and a Jungle-themed scavenger hunt. Educational fun facts are placed on signs throughout the course and explain about the geographic region of Central Africa, the two explorers Stanley and Livingstone, and their discoveries. The multi-level course is a picturesque setting, full of artificial rockwork and man-made mountains, waterfalls, streams, caves, and bridges. The course is designed so some holes require skill, some are based on chance, and still others call for a choice. (262-857-7888, www.congorivergolf.com)

Meanwhile, countless turkey legs have been consumed, ripe tomatoes have been hurled, and knighting ceremonies have taken place at the Bristol Renaissance Faire. This year promises to be no different as the Faire’s special anniversary Feast of Fooles festival begins July 7 for nine weekends through Labor Day, Sept. 3. “We’re going to party like it’s 1599,” said Linda McFeters, general manager of the Bristol Renaissance Faire.  One thing is certain when visiting the Faire – expect the unexpected. Jugglers, stilt-walkers, flying falcons, 16th Century court dancers, world-class singers, wine tastings, tea with the Queen, and more will create lifetime memories for Faire-goers.
